Need for the Biotech Course in India

  • Biotechnology is ready to take the center stage in the next industrial revolution of our times. It is a knowledge-based industry requiring manpower that has the right combination of the understanding of the technology as well as managerial expertise to harvest this technology into profit-making ventures.
  • The Indian scenario in this context faces a lacuna for trained manpower, both in terms of specific skill sets and the ability to mature technology into a commercial and fertile industry.

Candidate trainees:

  1. Students: The colleges in India today churn out degree holders who lack the technical expertise due to the void of well-equipped laboratories and good lab practice. Thus they are unable to man complex machines and systems which are used commonly in the biotechnology-based industry and laboratories.
  2. Institutions: Schools and colleges which do not have elaborate laboratory space and facilities, and would like to supplement their theory teaching with modern practical classes.
  3. Industrial candidates: Investors and established industrialists looking to diversify into the field of Biotechnology find themselves at crossroads when it comes to deciding what might be a profitable biotech venture or what kind of investment would be required both in terms of skilled manpower as well as infrastructure.

Biotechnology Course Content

To fulfill the above requirements Biotech Desk plans to start a learning programme in the area of Biotechnology and its ancillary fields. The multidisciplinary curriculum will cover all aspects of Biotechnology including understanding process principles, experimentation, animal and plant technologies, bioinformatics, basics of project management, IPR issues, business values and finances in BT.

We propose to have separate modules for students and corporates, which will focus on different themes. The student course will emphasize on practical hands-on training, teaching the ethics of GLP and a fundamental know-how of BT management.

On the other hand, the corporate course will aim to give an in-depth overview of the subject. We will help entrepreneurs establish realistic expectations of the field and introduce them to the knowledge-intensive subject.

The modules will be divided into semesters, each semester having syllabi to fulfill the particular requirements of the course. There shall be lectures and presentations by our own staff and invited speakers consisting of eminent scientists and industrialists. These shall be complemented by intensive training in the laboratory, preparing the scholar to use diverse instruments and tools.

The students will get to interact with the industrialists and vice-versa thus understanding the needs of each other. This shall help both parties to get in touch with their prospective business partners.
